6 Employee Engagement Trends in 2019

Did you know that disengaged employees can cost you a fortune in lost productivity?

When employees are truly engaged, they are actively involved in the life of your company, they are finding new ways to add value to your business, and they are motivated to do much more than a bare minimum required of them.  Here are a few interesting trends you might want to look into to boost employee engagement at your business.

Millennials

Millennials have surpassed Baby Boomers as the largest living generation in North America. It means that the modern workforce consists primarily of millennials. That’s why it is so important for your business to learn how to engage this group of employees. Collaborative environments where every opinion counts have proven to be the best fit for millennials. Make sure to act on their comments and opinions and provide your feedback on their performance consistently. Let them know where they stand and what to expect in the future on a regular basis. Consistent two-way communication is the key!

Individualized Approach

A one-size-fits-all approach does not work anymore. Everyone is different and the world encourages people to foster their individuality rather than force themselves to become like everyone else. Cultures where every employee can be themselves thrive and create an inclusive and positive work environment.

Purpose

According to LinkedIn, 71% of professionals say they are willing to take a pay cut to work for a company that has shared values and a mission they believe in. Knowing that the company you work for has a purpose is a huge motivation booster, so if you don’t have a mission statement yet, we suggest you start thinking about what gives your company a purpose and what values does it bring to society in general.

Get involved in the life of your community as well. Many businesses successfully collaborate with charity organizations and help the less fortunate on a regular basis. Giving back to the community brings employees together and creates a sense of belonging.

Flexible Work Schedules

In recent years, having a good work-life balance became an important factor when choosing an employer. There are many roles where the employees don’t need to be physically present at the office anymore. So, giving them a little wiggle room to run errands, be with their family or take care of personal things is a great idea if this freedom translates into boosting engagement and productivity. Being able to save two hours a day by not commuting is a huge benefit.

Wellness and Professional Development

LinkedIn reported that instead of free food and game rooms, employees would much rather see their company focusing on benefits like learning and development, wellness programs and more. Even if your company is a small business and doesn’t have too much room for a career path, make sure you invest in your employees’ training and help them learn new skills, thereby helping them become a better version of themselves every day. Provide them with personal development and learning opportunities and they will stick around.

Employee Experience

Just like you put your customers in the center of everything you do, your employees should also be the priority of your organization. It’s a well-known fact that retaining an existing client is at least five times cheaper than finding a new one.  Same goes for employees. Treat their thoughts, feelings, and observations with respect and you will be rewarded with lower turnover rates and better overall performance.
